The Oscars of Blooks

The Blooker Prize, for blogs that get published as books ("blooks") announced its 2006 Short List today. Guess which whale-killing journal is among the five blooks left standing in the fiction category? If you're stumped, or if you want to see the other Short Listees, click here.

In Other Whale News, Beluga Whales in Alaska are Mysteriously Disappearing. Shipmates, if one of you can solve this mystery, you'll win a beer:

Please don't say they are trying to use them like Beluga Caviar!! Since they don't lay eggs, that would be one hefty toast point!

Perhaps they're simply no longer fit to survive. Or they're too vain or too stubborn to grow a third eye.

Will you mount an expedition to find out? If so, I'll get pizza.

I wonder why the scientists haven't considered this.

Because then they would have to give the credit to someone else.

I forgot to say congratulations, Gus.

Do you think the judges are amenable to bribes? Something could be arranged....

I don't know much about Beluga whales except from the song by Raffi. Maybe they got tired of Raffi and decided to disappear for a while?

Well, according to SeaWorld, http://www.seaworld.org/infobooks/Beluga/behabitat.html

Belugas are adapted to icy ocean waters and warm freshwater. So maybe the icy seawater isn't quite icy enough these days, and the fresh water is somewhat less than fresh.

Alternately, maybe they're being hit by drowning polar bears

Or maybe you can google up the goods on them.

I don't know that this will win you a beer, Red. Sounds like you've already had one (at least) though.

Interesting theory: download yourself a bottle of Capt. Abe's (which also happens to be icy seawater).

LOL! Sorry Gus. I guess I am as stupid as Stupid George when it comes to answering your quizzes ;)

I'll give it a shot. It can't be anymore difficult than googling for whale porn. Speaking of porn, tell Nelson thanks for the IPO and the nudie pics.

I think I've just come up with a new drink, "Polar Bear depth charge": take one bottle of Capt. Abe's, pour it into a beer mug, fill shot glass with frozen vodka, drop into beer and down the lot in one go.

I wonder if it would be any good with sushi?
